The theme of “Women Together” aptly described Spice Build 2013, which saw 34 women from New Zealand building homes alongside five female-headed households in Jhapa. During the week, the women learned to build using a technology native to the Santhal people in the area. The team plastered a mixture of mud, cow dung and rice husks on the walls, windows and floor, cleaned bamboo, and cut, wove, and painted the outer walls and windows with flora and fauna from New Zealand.
On October 3, Nari Chetna Women Agricultural Cooperative unveiled the spice grinding machine donated by the New Zealand team. The women in the community no longer have to travel 40 kilometers to borrow another community’s machine. At the end of the build, five decent homes were built.
